Background:
My name… is Valoren Koon. And this is the story of how I got inside the tower.
I come from an orphanage, and the motto of that orphanage may as well have been survival of the fittest. I was one of fifty seven children that were trained since birth to enter this tower and rise to the top, the majority of us were from the Koon family. I don't know what was special about the others that weren't, but there weren't very many. All of us were male. We became like brothers to each other, relying on each other to get through hard times.
There were 5 different groups of us based on what our specialties were and what the superiors wanted us to be. My specialty is infiltration and long range combat. A weird combination to be sure, but that’s what the superiors wanted and that is what I was trained for.
About a week ago all 57 of us were gathered together and had everything we had learned tested. Those were some of the most grueling tests I have ever been a part of. From physical fights to mind games, everything about us was tested. None of us thought to much of the tests besides the fact that they were much more difficult than what we had been a part of in the past.
The training that we are accustomed began the day after and continued that way until a day or two ago. We were once again all gathered together. However this time, we found out who performed the best in those tests. Every child there was given a number that day that dictated how good they were compared to the others. It was then announced that in one week the top 10 would be the ones chosen to go into the tower.
At this point, many of us began to despair. Being number 37, I made my decision that day. There was no way I would stay behind to rot along with the rest of them. I looked at my options to rise up the ranks and become one of the 10. Several plans went through my mind, but only one would do it quickly enough. There just wasn’t enough to for anything else. So, using the fear that numbers 11 and above had, I started a war.
I started things small. All I needed to do was a whisper here and a rumor there. By the third day 12 people had been eliminated. Unfortunately, only 3 of those people were numbers below me. I needed to speed everything up. Blackmailing was my next step. Challenges that were never issued were made between different brothers. Fights began to break out due to the insults supposedly made from one brother to another. By the sixth day, I had managed to get my number down to 11 and the total number of brothers had been reduced to 15.
On that day, I had arranged for a final killing to happen. I would remove number 5 from the ranks with a well-placed long range shot using a sniper rifle. Frankly, I don’t like weapons like that. But a bolt of shinsoo would be too flashy. I needed something that didn’t flash. The noise wasn’t a problem. I would just mute the sound using a technique I learned from my infiltration training. He would not even be able to react or respond.
My decision to choose number 5 may seem like a bad decision. But in my haste to reduce the numbers, the amount of times numbers 6 through 10 changed kept me from watching their habits. Numbers 5 through 1 didn’t change throughout the entire ordeal. Figures, they are monsters when it comes to power.
The reason I chose number 5 is because of a habit he has. Every day at the exact same time he sits and reads from whatever book he happens to be interested in. What caught my eye though is the location. The same spot every day… with a large window looking out over the city.
I arrived at my location with thirty minutes to spare and began to wait. The time ticked very slowly. This would be the only kill that I would be directly involved in. Only twenty minutes left to go. My heart began to race. Controlling others actions and causing them to kill felt very different than what I was about to do.
Ten minutes left. I lined up my shot at the window and waited. I gripped the rifle harder. Five minutes. I breathed deeply and calmed my nerves. There would be time to think about what I was about to do later. No amount of training could stop my beating heart though. One minute. My hands were turning white from my grip on the gun. Ten seconds. I breathed deeply. 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… The moment passed. Nothing had happened. Did Number 5 find out? There was no way he could have found out! No one knew about this but me! I sighted once more in the window to make sure I didn’t make a mistake. What I saw made my heart stop.
A sign had been placed in the window. Large, dripping red letters spelled out the words ‘I see you…’ I quickly got to my feet and began to make a hasty retreat. My location was a small grove of trees nearby the orphanage, so getting out wasn’t the easiest thing to do. The fact that it was nighttime and dark outside didn’t help any.
I ran for a good two or three minutes before something caught my eye on one of the nearby trees. A sign had been bolted to the tree. For a second time my blood ran cold. There writing in the large freshly painted red lettering. The text this time spelled out ‘I know what you did…’ I doubled my efforts to get out of grove and to safety.
Near the end of the grove I slowed myself down, forcing myself to calm down. I evened out my breathing and slowly left the grove. The fog outside had gotten very thick and I could barely see what was in front of me. Strange since there didn’t seem to be a single cloud in the sky before this. I crouched lower to the ground and proceeded forward towards the orphanage.
“And where do you think you are going, little monster?” A whispery voice whispered into my right ear. It had an ethereal and unnatural sound to it. I jumped and looked to the right, seeing nothing but more fog. Silence continued for a minute or so and I resumed my slow crouching walk towards the building, wary of my surroundings and ready to fight at a moment’s notice. Something wasn’t right here.
“Are you proud of yourself?” I jumped and turned to the left, nearly firing off a shot in the process. My breathing quickened and my pulse beat faster. Someone was playing mind games with me. I turned to my training once again and calmed myself down. I stood up straight and spoke to the fog around me.
“Alright, you’ve got me. What do you want?” I am unsure how much time passed as I stood in upright in place waiting for an answer. Unfortunately, none seemed to be coming, so I eventually began my slow progress to the building again.
“Meet me in my studio if you wish to see the morning light tomorrow. I would like to have a word with you.” This time I remained calm. The voice had come out of nowhere, but it was in both my ears this time. The fog around me began to clear and I could make out the orphanage. I was only a few feet away from it.
I weighed my options. Thinking about it, this must be number 5 playing games with me. I could either go to his studio, the one I was about to kill him, or try my luck going to my room and boarding up until he left tomorrow. Looking at the two options I decided there was no choice. I had to go to his study. There would be no way I could go up against him in a fight.
I entered the orphanage. The hallways were long and empty. The place had been built for many people. Almost none were left. Every step I took echoed off the walls. I had caused this. The brothers that used to populate these halls were dead because of me. I shook my head and cleared my mind. I needed to be focused for this. No time for guilt at a time like this.
My steps echoed up the staircase as I traveled up it. The studio was on the fourth floor and the last door on the left from the stairs. The torches in the staircase seemed to lose the light they provided as I climbed. I opened the staircase door and entered the hallway.
What I saw made me gasp. There are twenty rooms on this floor. Ten doors on each side are the entrances to these rooms. Each door, with the exception of the studio room, that used to be there was now boarded up. The names of each brother that had died during the last few days were freshly painted with the same red paint along the walls, ceiling, and floor. Parts of the walls were caving in and the roof had large pieces either missing or falling down. Holes littered the floor.
I carefully walked to the currently open and only door. The studio room is a pretty standard one for the building. It has bookshelves along the walls with a large desk in the center. There are a couple of plush chairs around the room in case a reader wants to sit down somewhere besides the desk.
My heart began to beat faster as I neared the door. It seemed to be getting farther away as I walked. The walls felt as if they were getting closer and closer, with the names getting larger and larger. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply in an attempt to calm myself.
Reopening my eyes, I continued forward, steeling my nerves against what I was seeing. I focused on nothing during the last couple of feet to the door, only taking into account where the floor had caved in. I reached the doorway and attempted to look through. I don’t know how, but I couldn’t see anything within. My vision stopped a couple of inches past the doorway.
I took a deep breath and burst into the room. It took a second for the strange blackness to slowly recede, revealing the contents of the room. Standing in a semi-circle in front of me were five figures. All of them had black cloaks on hiding their faces and bodies. The cause of the shadows over their faces was the candles lighting from the roof of the room. All of them were looking at me.
“I see you made it.” The figure on the far right said. His voice matched the strange ethereal voice that I heard outside.
“Calm down. We aren’t going to hurt you.” The figure on the far left said with a very deep voice. He was the largest of the group, standing at least a foot above the rest of us.
“Where you the one who did it?” The middle one spoke with a deep, commanding and authoritative voice, “Caused this… mess?” He gestured to the building around him.
“Why question him? It is obvious he is the one,” a young sounding boy said to the left of the figure in the middle. “There is no one else left that could have.”
“Just give it to him already and let’s get on with this.” The figure to the right of him said. I wasn’t able to distinguish the voice. It just seemed to… appear in my mind.
I finally managed to process the words that were said. “Give me what? And what is going on!?” I yelled out at them. I already know that these five are the top 5. But why are they doing this? Is it because I tried to assassinate one of them?
The figure in the middle strode forward towards me. “You are the last one. All the rest are dead. Thanks to you. Congratulations Number 6. If you are wondering where the other nine have went, just think about it. Not everyone goes straight into a fight.”
No… I didn’t want this! I didn’t want them all dead!
“Numbers 7 through 9 are currently alive but won’t be for long. Number 9 is poisoned. Number 8 is bleeding to death from an attempted assassination from number 12. Number 8 is about to activate a trap. And number 7 is already half dead from a poisoned drink. And it is all your fault.”
I fell to my knees, the weight of what I had done the past week finally catching up to me. I hadn’t mean this… I just didn’t want to get left behind. No! What I had done was the only thing I could have! There was no other way!
“You should be killed and removed from the standings to get into the tower. No one needs a person like you there. We even came to a unanimous vote to do it.”
I fell further down to my elbows, now bending over. So this is how it would end then? Everything was for nothing? I caused the deaths of so many of my brothers and I wouldn’t even enter the tower?
The cloaked figure in front of me produced something small and tossed it on my back. “We are going to spare your life. If you want to find out why, find me in the tower and perhaps I will tell you. But remember, nothing can remove the sins you have caused here.” I looked up in shock as the cloaked figure strode past me. The other four quickly followed out the door.
A couple of minutes passed before I quickly stood up and whirled around.
"No! Come back! Tell me why?! I don't deserve to live right! Then tell me why! Tell me!!" I yelled down. Nothing answered me. I leaned against the wall next to the doorway.
"Why... I don't understand. After all I've done here. Why let me live?" I sunk to the ground and wrapped my arms around my legs. Tears came easily, flowing down my face. My emotions had finally caught up to me. All my friends, even though I didn't like them that much, are gone.
The next morning I entered the tower.
My name is Valoren from the Koon family, and I will travel up this tower for the answers.
Comments:
Well, I hadn't originally planned for the backstory to be that wrong, but I guess it is okay. I just started writing and bam. I have a long backstory.
Pretty new to writing stuff like this, so I am assuming there is a ton of typos and errors in the above text. But anyways, I'm looking forward to continuing this.
For anyone who doesn't know, I also have Jake Johnson. Funnily enough, this character was originally the one I was going to use for the larger roleplay, but I decided that I wanted to have a more normal(ish) character than a somewhat more crazy guy. Not to mention there are already enough Shinsoo users over there. I also like Jake Johnson better for a multi-person RolePlay. I feel like this character would just increase strife by a ton.
Anyways, was fun to write this. Hoping I can continue it in the future.
If anyone finds any errors or inconsistencies in the back story, let me know and I will fix it.

04/15/2015: Changed the orphanage to not only a Koon orphanage. I decided that I wanted to have a bit more variety than just a bunch of guys.
